Editorial scope and methodology

Scope: US national installed prices for a residential garage door. Size, insulation, windows, wind rating and local labor change a real quote.

Method: Door prices are quoted from This Old House’s garage door cost guide (updated 13 March 2026, data from Homewyse); opener and removal costs from Angi (updated 17 December 2024, the most recent date on that page). Both read 6 November 2026 and rounded as published. The quick estimate multiplies the per-door range by the number of doors.

What changes the price

Size and material set most of the price, then features. Insulation (look for the R-value), windows, decorative carriage-house hardware and a wind-load rating in hurricane areas all add to a basic door. A new door also usually needs new tracks and springs, which most installers include.

One wide double door usually costs less than two single doors for the same opening, because there is one set of hardware and one opener.

Torsion springs are under high tension. Spring replacement and door installation are jobs for a professional, not a DIY project.
