How Much Does Water Heater Replacement Cost in 2026?

Replacing a water heater costs $900 to $3,000 for most homes in 2026, and about $1,400 on average, unit and installation together. A standard tank heater installed runs $600 to $2,500, a tankless heater $1,000 to $4,000, and a heat pump (hybrid) heater $1,200 to $4,600. Haul-away and permits can add a few hundred dollars. These are national ranges from Fixr, updated January 27, 2026; use the quick estimate below, then get two or three written quotes.

Water heater replacement cost by type

Installed prices: the heater, labor and standard connections, as national ranges.

TypeInstalled costGood to know
Tank (storage)$600 - $2,500The usual like-for-like swap; 40 to 50 gallons for most families.
Tankless (on demand)$1,000 - $4,000Gas units may need a new vent and a larger gas line.
Heat pump (hybrid)$1,200 - $4,600Needs space, airflow and a 240-volt circuit; lowest running cost on electricity.
Indirect (boiler-fed)$1,200 - $4,500Only for homes with a boiler that can heat the tank.

$600 – $2,500Tank (storage): 1 heaters at $600–$2,500 per heater installed. Unit and installation (Fixr, January 27, 2026). Removal ($75 - $500) and a permit ($25 - $1,500) can be extra.

Editorial scope and methodology

Scope: US national installed-price ranges for replacing a residential water heater. Local labor, code upgrades, fuel type and access change a real quote.

Method: Ranges are quoted from Fixr’s water heater installation cost guide (updated 27 January 2026, read 6 November 2026), rounded as published. The quick estimate multiplies the per-heater range by the number of heaters; it does not add removal or permits.

Other costs on a replacement quote

ItemTypical costWhen it applies
Labor$300 - $1,500Included in the installed prices above; plumbers charge $45 - $200 per hour.
Removal and disposal$75 - $500If the plumber charges separately to haul the old tank away.
Permit$25 - $1,500Most areas require one; higher for new gas lines or electrical work.

What changes the price

A like-for-like swap is the cheapest job: the same fuel, the same size, in the same spot. Switching from a tank to tankless, or from gas to a heat pump, adds work such as a new vent, a bigger gas line, a condensate drain or a new 240-volt circuit, which is why those ranges run higher.

Code updates can surprise you on an older install. Many areas now require an expansion tank, seismic straps, a drain pan or a new temperature and pressure relief line, and the installer has to bring the job up to code to pass inspection.

Access matters too. A heater in an attic, a crawl space or a tight closet takes longer to remove and install than one in an open garage or basement.

Signs it is time to replace, not repair

  • Water at the base of the tank

A leaking tank cannot be repaired; plan the replacement before it fails completely.

  • Rusty or discolored hot water

Often a sign the tank lining is corroding from the inside.

  • Age past about 10 years

Tank heaters commonly last 8 to 12 years; repairs on an old tank are rarely worth it.

  • Running out of hot water

A failing element or sediment build-up, or a tank that is now too small for the household.
