How Much Does Window Replacement Cost in 2026?
Replacing a window costs $450 to $1,200 installed in 2026, and about $800 on average. A single-story home with 10 to 15 windows typically spends $8,000 to $12,000, and a two-story home with 15 to 30 windows $12,000 to $24,000. Vinyl frames ($350 to $800 a window) are the budget choice, while wood ($600 to $2,000) and large bay or bow windows cost the most. These are national ranges from Fixr, updated January 21, 2026.

Insert or full-frame replacement?
An insert (pocket) replacement fits a new window into the existing frame, so trim and siding stay put and the job is quicker and cheaper. A full-frame replacement removes the old frame down to the rough opening, which costs more but lets the installer fix rot, add insulation and flash the opening properly.
Ask each installer which method they quote, what glass package (double or triple pane, low-E coating, gas fill) is included, and how they will flash and seal the opening. Those three things explain most of the difference between quotes for the same number of windows.

Window color and grille pattern change the whole facade. Black frames against white siding read very differently from white frames, and divided lites suit a farmhouse or colonial more than a modern house. Upload a photo of your house to an AI exterior design tool to compare looks before you order.
