Quick answer
How do I redesign my front yard with AI?
Photograph the front yard from the sidewalk or the porch steps so the lawn, the beds and the walkway fill most of the frame, and upload it. HomeGPT keeps the house, fences, walls and gates as they are and redraws the planting, path edging and lawn inside the front boundary, as two options with each plant group listed and a typical local price. A photo that is mostly the house front is read as a house and gets the house jobs, such as new paint, instead. For ideas by budget, see front yard landscaping ideas.
Before and afters
Real front yards and the AI concept for each, once they pass a blind check.

Start at the house: foundation planting
Planting along the base of the house does more for a front yard than anything else. Layer it: a few evergreen shrubs for structure, mid-height perennials in front, and a low edge plant along the lawn or path. Keep planting below window sills and away from the walls so air can move and the house can be maintained.
Repeat two or three plants rather than mixing ten. From the street, repetition reads as design; variety reads as clutter.
A path that leads to the door
Visitors should know where the front door is the moment they arrive. A defined path, with a clean edge or low planting along it and enough width for two people, does that. If the path already works, a crisp edge and a little planting where it meets the steps is often enough.
Changing the path surface or the driveway is a hardscape job; the paver calculator and the concrete calculator help with quantities.
Lawn, or less lawn
A small lawn with a clean shape looks better than a large tired one. Many front yards gain from a deeper bed along the front, a gravel strip in dry corners, or a drought-tolerant planting where grass struggles. The AI keeps the lawn inside your boundary and gives it an edge that is easy to keep.
Classic foundation planting
Evergreens and flowering shrubs along the house, a neat lawn and a clear path.
Cottage front yard
Deep, loose borders of perennials that change with the seasons.
Low-maintenance modern
Grasses, clipped evergreens and gravel in a restrained palette.
Plants that work at the front
Front yards are seen all year, so structure matters more than flowers. Evergreen shrubs such as boxwood, holly or dwarf pines hold the shape in winter; flowering shrubs like hydrangea and spirea add a season of color; perennials such as catmint, salvia and coneflowers fill the gaps. Grasses add movement and need little care. Check the hardiness zone and how much sun the front gets: a north-facing front yard wants shade plants, a south-facing one wants drought-tolerant ones.
Once you know what you want, the landscaping calculator and mulch calculator estimate soil and mulch for the beds.
Small front yards
Small front yards often see the biggest change from layered planting, a defined walkway edge and one small anchor tree or large shrub. Seeing it on your own photo before you buy plants stops the classic mistake: too many small plants spread too thin.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
How does AI front yard design work?
Upload a photo of your front yard taken from the sidewalk or the porch steps, with the yard filling most of the frame. HomeGPT plans the planting beds, path edging and lawn shape, then draws two options on your actual yard, with each item listed and roughly priced.
Can AI improve my curb appeal?
Yes. Comparing planting layouts and lawn shapes on your own photo is one of the fastest ways to test curb appeal before spending anything on plants or labor.
What front yard styles can I try?
The two garden styles that passed blind tests on real yards: cottage garden, and modern low-maintenance with grasses, evergreens and large pale paving.
Does it work for small front yards?
Yes. Small front yards often see the biggest visual change from layered planting, a defined walkway edge and one small anchor tree.
Do I still need a landscaper?
For planting beds and mulch, many people do the work themselves. For new paths, drainage, walls or irrigation, a landscaper is worth it: send them the brief from your plan so they quote for what you actually want.
How do I estimate the cost of a front yard redesign?
Each option shows a typical price per item with its basis and date. The landscaping calculator estimates mulch, soil and rock, and the landscaping cost guide gives 2026 ranges for beds, sod and irrigation.
